Please be aware that there are restrictions in the use of ovens and stoves on the Sabbath and Holidays. If you are unfamiliar with the laws of keeping food warm on the Sabbath or cooking on the Holidays, please call your Rabbi. Please note that when the Holiday and Sabbath coincide, the Sabbath laws prevail. Before first use of a new oven be sure to wash the racks and interior of the oven thoroughly with warm water and soap to remove any coating oil.
* See item 8 under ovens.
RANGETOPS/COOKTOPS:
1. On the Sabbath, a flame may not be initiated, adjusted or turned off.
2. On the Sabbath, a "blech" should be used to cover the flame in addition to covering the controls. For the gas burners use a standard blech. (Cover the knobs with a separate piece of foil. Putting the knobs under the blech may damage them.) The manufacturer sells a cast iron griddle, model number PGD for rangetops and SU-PGD for cooktops, that can be used as a blech. The controls must still be covered.
3. Cabinets holding gas cooktops should be vented properly. This should minimize the possibility of the flame blowing out under the blech when drawers are closed. Even then, drawers and doors should be moved slowly near the blech.
4. On the Holidays, an existing flame may be raised or lowered for cooking requirements. However, a flame may not be initiated or turned completely off. The griddle option has an indicator light that cycles. One can raise the temperature when the light is on and lower it when the light is off.
5. During a power failure, gas cooktops will remain on. (The griddle will go off, but will return with power.)
OVENS:
1. On the Sabbath the oven temperature may not be initiated, adjusted or turned off.
2. On the Sabbath, in lieu of a "blech", the oven controls should be covered. (Be careful not to cover vent openings.)
3. All food should be placed in the oven before the Sabbath begins, since none may be placed in the oven during the Sabbath.
4. On the Sabbath, the oven door may only be opened once, all the food removed and then closed. On the Holidays, the oven door may be opened/closed at any time as often as desired.
5. For the Holidays, the oven should be turned on before the Holiday. Once on, the temperature may be adjusted for cooking purposes by following the indicator light. Raise the temperature when the light is on and lower it when it is off. The oven may be shut off when the light is off but then may not be used again on that Holiday.
6. These ovens do not have a timed bake feature.
7. After recovery from a power failure, all these ovens will return to the temperature setting that existed before the power outage.
8. The oven light must be turned on before the Sabbath or Holidays, or the bulb must be unscrewed. Please note that this applies only to the above models with an asterisk.
